Description
A diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder isn’t the typical catalyst for kicking off a business venture. But then Sharon Baum Crawford isn’t the typical entrepreneur.
Crawford’s diagnosis as one of the over 2 million Americans with Bipolar Disorder provided answers to a lot of questions, and solved the riddle of her many mysterious childhood symptoms.
Now successfully established in her “9-5” career, Crawford combines her love of jewelry making with her passion for raising awareness of the disorder.
“Beads for Bipolar” is her vehicle for making and selling unique custom beaded bracelets with a purpose.
“Our bracelets are both beautiful and unique,” says Crawford, “and we’re partnering with mental health agencies and providing them with a portion of the proceeds from all sales. These agencies do wonderful work to both build awareness of bipolar and also to help remove the stigma so often attached to those with the disorder.”
While mental illness experts don’t fully understand the disorder, many experts believe the disorder is genetic as it runs in families.
In 1999, Crawford lost her brother, Jeremy, to suicide. “Jeremy, though not formally diagnosed, exhibited classic bipolar symptoms,” says Crawford. “But those were the early days when awareness was low and he went untreated. Beads for Bipolar was created in Jeremy’s memory and works hard to raise general awareness so that others don’t suffer as he did.”
Crawford remains upbeat about combating Bipolar: “We’re making headway. So many Americans with the disorder are now living normal and productive lives, successfully managing the disorder. We’re thrilled to be able to help raise awareness and spread the word that even with a diagnosis of bipolar it’s possible to live happy, healthy and productive lives.”
